Learn more about cloud monitoring

Cloud monitoring is the practice of monitoring cloud-based systems and workloads, similarly to how traditional IT monitoring handles on-premises environments. Acknowledging and addressing service issues and failures is only the beginning. Cloud monitoring is about intelligently predicting problems in advance and, increasingly, automating a response to remedy these problems before users are impacted.

As organizations adopt multicloud approaches, IT managers must implement tools and systems that allow full-stack visibility into the complexity. Integrating cloud monitoring can dramatically improve operations in everything from simple service availability to high performance and overall profitability of the business.

Cloud monitoring can encompass a variety of areas, often defined as observational, analysis or engagement. Concepts that are essential to cloud monitoring overlap with other disciplines, including IT operations management (ITOM), security information and event management (SIEM), security orchestration, automation, and response (SOAR), operational intelligence (OI) and many others.

Monitoring and observability are distinct, yet related, concepts. Monitoring is an action you perform to increase the observability of your system. Observability, an evolution of monitoring, enables measuring the behavior and service performance of hybrid cloud workloads.

Cloud monitoring provides information that allows IT to act. For example, cloud monitoring tools can highlight workloads that are having an impact on other operations, positively or negatively, and help organizations right-size workloads according to goals, resources and budget. Good cloud monitoring provides insights and highlights opportunities.
